Which car seat does my child need?

The right seat depends on your child's age, weight and height, not just one number. Here is how our three seat types line up, as a simple starting point.

Rear-facing baby capsule (newborn to around 12 months)

Forward-facing toddler seat (around 1 to 4 years)

Once your little one has outgrown the capsule, a toddler seat with a 5-point harness keeps them snug at the shoulders and hips. This is the seat most parents mean when they search for a toddler seat taxi.

High-back booster seat (around 4 to 8 years)

A booster lifts your child so the adult seatbelt sits across the shoulder and hips rather than the neck and tummy. The high back adds side support, which is great if they nod off on a long drive.

NSW child car seat rules, simply explained

In NSW, children under 7 must travel in an approved child restraint suited to their age and size. Approved means it meets the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1754.

• Under 6 months: rear-facing restraint.
• 6 months to 4 years: rear-facing or forward-facing seat with an in-built harness.
• 4 to 7 years: forward-facing seat with harness, or a booster seat with a seatbelt.

Taxis have some limited exemptions. A child under 1 must always be in a suitable restraint, but children over 1 can legally travel in a taxi with just an adult seatbelt if no seat is available. Legal isn't the same as safe, though. An adult belt simply doesn't fit a small body properly.
