Leaving hospital with your baby is a moment you will remember. Our newborn taxi Royal North Shore Hospital service makes it an easy one: a clean car, a rear-facing capsule already installed, and a driver who helps with your bags and drives gently home.

Royal North Shore Hospital is on Reserve Road in St Leonards, with maternity care in its Clinical Services Building. North Shore Private Hospital sits directly opposite on Westbourne Street. We collect from both, and take families home anywhere across Sydney, at any hour.

Two hospitals, one campus

Many North Shore parents give birth at either Royal North Shore, the public tertiary hospital with a neonatal intensive care unit, or North Shore Private across the road. Because the two share a campus, it is easy to mix up entrances, drop-off areas and car parks on the day.

We confirm the exact pick-up point with you when you book and again on discharge day, so your driver is waiting in the right place. If you are at North Shore Private, its own website says the main entrance is on Westbourne Street, entered from the Pacific Highway end, with a drop-off area out front.

Parking at RNSH on discharge day

The hospital lists metered street parking on Herbert Street and Westbourne Street, plus paid multi-storey car parks. On discharge day that often means one parent fetching the car while the other waits with the baby, the bags and the flowers.

With a pre-booked car, you leave together. Your quote is fixed, includes the capsule and any tolls, and does not change if paperwork runs late.

Timing your newborn taxi from Royal North Shore Hospital

Discharge rarely happens at an exact time. Final checks for you and your baby, a hearing screen, medications and the discharge summary can all take longer than expected.

  • Book ahead with your expected discharge date. Many parents book before the birth.
  • Call 0426 779 775 once you are signed out, and we will confirm your car.
  • Plans change? If your stay is extended or your baby needs more time in special care, just tell us and we will move the booking.

We run 24/7, so a weekend or late-evening discharge is fine.

Capsule fitting you can trust

In NSW, babies under 6 months must travel in an approved rear-facing restraint, and taxis have no exemption for babies under 12 months. A standard cab rarely carries a capsule.

Our rear-facing baby capsules meet AS/NZS 1754 and are secured with ISOFIX and a top tether before your driver sets off for St Leonards. Drivers are trained in installation and will help you check the harness sits snugly. Capsules are cleaned between trips. Read more about our baby capsule taxi.

Gentle driving after birth or a caesarean

Whether you had a straightforward birth or a caesarean, your body needs care on the way home. Our drivers brake early, take speed humps and corners slowly, and avoid sudden lane changes on the Pacific Highway and Warringah Freeway.

After a caesarean, many mums find a small folded towel or pillow between the seatbelt and the wound more comfortable, with the lap belt sitting low across the hips. Follow your midwife's advice. We are happy to stop if your baby needs a feed. See our newborn hospital discharge taxi page.

Discharge-day checklist

  • Discharge summary, your baby's blue book and any medications
  • A going-home outfit without bulky layers under the harness
  • A wrap or muslin to place over your baby once buckled in
  • Nappy bag, spare clothes and a feed for the trip
  • Your hospital bags, gifts and flowers, packed and ready
  • Your phone charged so we can reach you

Twins, siblings and the whole family

Going home with twins? We fit two rear-facing capsules side by side and send an SUV or larger vehicle with room for a double pram. If older siblings or grandparents are coming too, a 7-seater van or 11-seater people mover can carry several seats. Ask about our maxi taxi with baby seats, or book online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where will the driver pick us up at Royal North Shore Hospital?

The RNSH and North Shore Private campus has several entrances and drop-off areas, and arrangements can change with building works. Rather than guess, we confirm the exact pick-up point with you when you book and again on the day. Your driver will call when they arrive and help bring your bags to the car.

Can I book before I know my discharge date?

Yes. Book with your due date or expected discharge day, and we will hold the booking. Once you know the actual day and time, call 0426 779 775 or email us and we will adjust it. Many parents organise their newborn taxi weeks before the birth.

Do you bring the baby capsule, or do we need our own?

We bring it. A rear-facing capsule suitable for newborns is installed and anchored with ISOFIX and a top tether before your car arrives. It meets AS/NZS 1754, and your driver will help you check the harness fit before setting off.

Is the drive gentle enough after a caesarean?

Our drivers know they are carrying a new mum and a newborn. They brake early, take corners and speed humps slowly, and choose smoother routes where they can. Many mums place a folded towel between the belt and the wound for comfort. We can also stop along the way if you need a break.

Can you take twins home from RNSH?

Yes. We fit two rear-facing capsules and send a vehicle with enough boot space for a double pram and bags. If other children are travelling too, we can provide a larger vehicle with extra seats. Just tell us how many children and their ages when you book.

Do you also collect from North Shore Private Hospital?

Yes. North Shore Private is directly opposite Royal North Shore on Westbourne Street in St Leonards, and we collect from both. The same capsule fitting, fixed pricing and gentle driving apply. We are an independent service and are not affiliated with either hospital.
