Leaving hospital with a newborn is a big step, and the first car ride deserves the same care your baby received on the ward. Our newborn taxi Westmead Hospital service picks families up with a rear-facing baby capsule already installed and checked, so you can settle your baby in and head home without fumbling with straps in a busy car park.

Westmead is one of Sydney's largest health precincts, and many families travel some distance to give birth here. Whether you are going home to Parramatta, the Hills, Blacktown or further afield, we plan the trip around you, your baby and everything you are bringing home.

Two maternity options on one Westmead campus

The public Westmead Hospital sits on the corner of Hawkesbury Road and Darcy Road. Right beside it is Westmead Private Hospital, on the corner of Mons and Darcy Roads, where the private maternity unit is located; the hospital lists its main entrance on Darcy Road. The Children's Hospital at Westmead shares the same precinct.

Because the campus is large and has several entrances, we confirm the exact pick-up point with you when you book. Just tell us which hospital you are in and roughly which ward or building, and we will arrange a meeting spot that keeps the walk short for mum.

Newborn taxi Westmead Hospital: booking around an uncertain discharge

Discharge times are hard to predict. A paediatric review, a hearing screen, a final feed or a pharmacy wait can all move the clock, and that is perfectly normal. We work around it rather than asking you to guess.

  • Book early. Let us know your hospital and expected discharge day, even before the birth.
  • Call when you are signed out. Ring 0426 779 775 once the midwives give you the all-clear and we will send your car.
  • Change plans freely. If baby needs an extra night, simply message us and we will move the booking.

We run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so a late-evening or Sunday discharge is no trouble. Your quote is fixed and already includes the baby seat and tolls, so waiting on paperwork never changes the price.

What to have ready before you leave the ward

A few minutes of preparation makes the trip to the car much easier, especially if you have been in for several nights.

  • Discharge papers, your baby's blue book and any medications for mum
  • A simple going-home outfit for baby, without thick padding or a snowsuit
  • A light wrap to tuck over the harness once baby is buckled, never underneath it
  • A small bag with nappies, wipes and a spare outfit within reach
  • Loose, comfortable clothes for mum and a small pillow if you would like one
  • Flowers, balloons, a pram or a bassinet, so we can send a car with enough space

If an older sibling is coming to collect you, tell us their age and we will fit the right seat for them as well.

Capsule fitted correctly before we arrive

In NSW, children under seven must travel in an approved restraint suited to their age and size, and babies under six months must be rear-facing. Taxis have limited exemptions once a child turns one, but none of that helps a newborn, and a capsule rushed in at the kerb is easy to get wrong.

Our rear-facing capsules meet Australian Standard AS/NZS 1754 and are anchored with ISOFIX and a top tether before pickup. Drivers are trained in correct installation and will happily show you how the harness should sit snugly at your baby's shoulders. Seats are cleaned between trips and every vehicle is sanitised. A gentle drive home across western Sydney

After a vaginal birth or a caesarean, every bump and quick stop can be felt. Our drivers brake early, take speed humps slowly and choose the smoothest route they can, with plenty of time to help you in and out of the car.

From Westmead, many families head along Hawkesbury Road towards Parramatta, west on the Great Western Highway or the M4 towards Blacktown and Penrith, or north towards the Hills District. As a rough guide, the Parramatta CBD is usually around 10 minutes away and Castle Hill around 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. If you need a pharmacy stop on the way, just ask.

Twins, siblings and a car full of baby gear

Westmead cares for many families with twins and multiples, and going home with two babies means two capsules and a lot more luggage. We can fit two rear-facing capsules side by side, plus a toddler seat or booster for an older child if needed.

For bigger families, a 7-seater van or one of our people movers with multiple baby seats leaves room for a double pram, a travel cot and the hospital bags. Tell us what you are bringing when you book and we will match the vehicle to it. You can also read how our wider newborn hospital discharge taxi service works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you pick up from Westmead Private Hospital as well as Westmead Hospital?

Yes. We collect families from both the public Westmead Hospital and Westmead Private Hospital, which share the Westmead campus. Tell us which hospital you are in when you book, and we will confirm the exact pick-up point with you so the walk to the car is as short as possible.

What if I don't know what time we will be discharged?

That is very common. Book with your expected discharge day, then call us on 0426 779 775 once you have been signed out and we will send the car. If your stay is extended, message us and we will move the booking. Your fixed quote does not change while you wait on paperwork.

Do I need to bring my own baby capsule?

No. We supply a rear-facing baby capsule that meets AS/NZS 1754 and fit it with ISOFIX and a top tether before we arrive. If you prefer to use your own capsule, let us know when booking and we can talk through the options for your vehicle.

Can you take twins home from Westmead?

Yes. We can fit two rear-facing capsules side by side and add a seat for an older sibling if needed. With twins there is usually extra luggage, so tell us about prams and bags when you book and we will send a larger vehicle such as an SUV or 7-seater van.

Is the ride suitable after a caesarean?

Our drivers drive gently, brake early, slow right down over speed humps and give you all the time you need to get in and out. Bring a small pillow to hold against your tummy under the seatbelt if your midwife suggests it, and let the driver know if you would like a quieter route.

Will my double pram fit in the car?

Usually, yes. Our SUVs, 7-seater vans and people movers have large boots for prams, double prams, travel cots and luggage. Tell us the type of pram and how many bags you have when you book, and we will send a vehicle with enough space.
