Getting through Sydney Airport with a baby takes a little more planning than flying solo. There's the pram, the nappy bag, the bottles, the car seat question, and a small person who doesn't care what time boarding closes. The good news is that the airport is set up for families, and most hiccups can be avoided with a bit of preparation.
This guide covers what parents actually ask us: which terminal you'll use, how security works with prams and formula, where to change and feed, and where to be picked up or dropped off. It's based on Sydney Airport's own published information at the time of writing, but rules and layouts do change, so always double-check with your airline before you fly.
Know your terminal: T1 International vs T2 and T3 Domestic
Sydney Airport has two separate precincts. T1 handles international flights, while T2 and T3 are the domestic terminals, sitting side by side on the other side of the runways. They're not connected by a walkway, so check your booking carefully, especially if you're connecting.
- Moving between T1 and T2/T3: Sydney Airport runs a free Terminal Transfer Bus, which it says runs about every 15 minutes from roughly 5:30 am to 10:30 pm, with a trip of around 10 minutes. The Airport Link train also connects the terminals, though it's a paid fare.
- Opening hours: the airport lists T1 as open from about 3 am and T2/T3 from about 4 am, closing around 11 pm. If you have a very early flight, plan your arrival around this.
With a pram, nappy bag and luggage in tow, many parents find a door-to-door car simpler than juggling buses or trains, particularly on a tight connection.
Getting through security with a pram and little ones
Everyone is screened, including infants. Under government rules, Sydney Airport asks that babies and children be taken out of prams and carriers; you carry your baby through, and children who can walk go through on their own. Your pram or stroller then goes through the x-ray machine with your carry-on bags.
- Assistance lane: at T1 and T2, Sydney Airport says you can choose Lane 3, a dedicated assistance lane. It's worth asking for if you're managing a pram alone.
- You won't be separated: the airport is clear that parents will never be asked to separate from their children, though officers may ask you to help screen your child.
- Prams on board: many airlines don't allow prams in the cabin. Policies on gate-checking prams, and on lending strollers within the terminal, vary between airlines, so contact yours well before travel (Sydney Airport suggests at least 48 hours ahead) to confirm what's possible.

Baby formula, breast milk and food: the security rules
This is the question we hear most. Here's the general picture, based on Sydney Airport and Australian Government guidance at the time of writing:
- Domestic flights: there are no limits on powders, liquids, aerosols and gels for a baby or infant on flights within Australia. The exception is a domestic flight leaving from T1 International, or a domestic leg connecting to an international flight, where international limits apply.
- International flights: the usual 100 ml liquid limit has an exemption for baby products. You can carry a reasonable quantity for the flight plus possible delays, including milk, expressed breast milk, sterilised water, juice and baby food.
- Powdered formula: organic powders like formula have no quantity limit, but you may need to present them separately for screening.
Pack baby items where you can reach them quickly, and remember that screening officers have the final say. If you're unsure about something, check the Australian Government's TravelSECURE guidance before you leave home.
Parents' rooms, changing and play areas
Sydney Airport says parents' rooms and baby change facilities are located throughout the terminals. At T3, it notes they're found both before and after security. For arriving passengers, bathrooms, parents' rooms and nursing facilities are located near the baggage collection areas, which is handy for a quick change before the drive home.
If you're flying out of T1 with a toddler, the airport lists dedicated play spaces near Gate 10 (an interactive kids' zone), Gate 50 (a McDonald's play area with a physical playground) and Gate 53 (a digital activation with the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences). A run-around before boarding can make a long flight easier for everyone.
One sweet extra: Sydney Airport offers free Cuddly Care Cards at Ambassador desks in T1 and T2. Attach one to your child's favourite toy so it's easier to reunite if it goes missing.

Timing tips: Sydney Airport with a baby
- Domestic: Sydney Airport recommends arriving at least 1 hour before departure with hand luggage only, or 2 hours if checking bags. With a baby, we'd lean towards the longer end.
- International: the airport recommends arriving 3 hours before departure unless your airline says otherwise.
- Build in a buffer: nappy changes, feeds and pram folding all take time. An extra 20–30 minutes takes the pressure off.
- Arrivals take longer than you think: after an international flight, immigration, baggage and biosecurity can stretch well beyond landing time. Share your flight number with whoever is collecting you so they can track it.
Sydney Airport pick-up and drop-off zones explained
Drop-off: at both T1 and T2/T3, drop-off is on the Departures level. Sydney Airport asks drivers to stop for no more than one minute and stay with the vehicle, so have the pram and bags ready to grab.
Pick-up at T1: the Public Pick-up zone near the terminal allows a short free stay once per day (currently up to 15 minutes), and the P7 car park is opposite for longer waits. Pick-up at T2/T3: there's an Express Pick-up zone a short walk away, plus a Priority Pick-up zone signposted in green from Arrivals, with a passenger waiting area. It has a 2.9 m height limit, which matters for larger vans.
Fifteen minutes isn't long when you're waiting on bags, a nappy change and a toddler. That's why a pre-booked airport transfer with a baby seat takes so much stress out of arrivals: your driver tracks your flight, confirms the meeting point and waits for you.
Sydney airport transfer with baby seat: why it's worth pre-booking
In NSW, children under 7 must travel in an approved child restraint suited to their age and size: rear-facing for babies under 6 months, rear or forward-facing with an in-built harness from 6 months to 4 years, and a forward-facing harnessed seat or booster from 4 to 7. Taxis have limited exemptions, which means a rank taxi may not have the right seat, and fitting your own after a long flight is hard work.
With Baby Taxi Sydney, the right capsule, toddler seat or booster is installed using ISOFIX and top tether before your driver arrives, and all restraints meet Australian Standard AS/NZS 1754. Our sedans, SUVs, 7-seater vans and 11-seater people movers have room for prams, travel cots and luggage, and travelling with a bigger group is easy with our maxi taxi with baby seats. As Tom S. said: "Airport pick up and drop off with baby seat was spot on."

Can I take baby formula and breast milk through security at Sydney Airport?
Yes. On domestic flights there are no limits on baby liquids or powders, unless you depart from T1 International. On international flights you can carry a reasonable quantity of baby products, including milk, expressed breast milk, sterilised water and baby food, for the flight plus possible delays. Powdered formula has no quantity limit but may need to be presented separately for screening.
Can I take my pram to the gate at Sydney Airport?
Your pram goes through security x-ray with your carry-on bags, so you can usually keep it with you in the terminal. Whether you can use it right to the aircraft door, and whether it travels in the cabin or hold, depends on your airline. Many airlines don't allow prams in the cabin, so check your airline's policy before you fly.
Where are the parents' rooms at Sydney Airport?
Sydney Airport says parents' rooms and baby change facilities are located throughout its terminals, and at T3 they're available both before and after security. For arriving passengers, bathrooms, parents' rooms and nursing facilities are located near the baggage collection areas. Terminal maps on the Sydney Airport website show exact locations, which can change during works.
How early should I get to Sydney Airport with a baby?
Sydney Airport recommends arriving at least 1 hour before a domestic flight with hand luggage only, 2 hours if you're checking bags, and 3 hours before an international flight unless your airline advises otherwise. With a baby or toddler, add a buffer of 20 to 30 minutes for feeds, nappy changes and folding the pram at security.
Do I need my own car seat for a taxi from Sydney Airport?
NSW law requires children under 7 to use an approved child restraint suited to their age and size, but taxis have limited exemptions, so a rank taxi may not carry the right seat. Bringing your own means fitting it yourself after a long flight. Pre-booking a baby seat taxi means the correct seat is already installed and checked when you arrive.
Where will my driver pick us up at Sydney Airport?
It depends on your terminal. T1 International has a Public Pick-up zone near the terminal and the P7 car park opposite. T2 and T3 Domestic have an Express Pick-up zone and a green-signposted Priority Pick-up zone. When you book with Baby Taxi Sydney, your driver confirms the exact meeting point with you beforehand.
