Flying into Sydney with a baby is adventure enough without working out how to get from the airport to your accommodation safely. If you're travelling light and don't have a car seat with you, it helps to know the car seat alternatives in Sydney before you land, because NSW rules for babies in cars are strict.
This guide covers the main options: hiring a seat, bringing your own, pre-booking a taxi with a baby seat already fitted, and getting around by public transport with a pram. It's general information only, so for your own situation check the official NSW Government guidance before you travel.
Before comparing car seat alternatives in Sydney: what NSW law requires
In NSW, children under 7 must travel in an approved child restraint suited to their age and size. Approved means it meets the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1754. Babies up to 6 months must be in a rear-facing seat, and from 6 months to 4 years children need a rear-facing seat or a forward-facing seat with an inbuilt harness.
The rules change slightly depending on the type of vehicle:
- Taxis: a baby under 12 months can't travel unless secured in a suitable approved child restraint, and the driver must not start the trip without one. Children over 1 may legally use a seatbelt in a taxi, although a child seat is strongly recommended.
- Uber, DiDi and hire cars: the same rules as a private car apply, so every child under 7 needs a suitable restraint. The driver can refuse the trip if there isn't one.
Standard taxis and rideshare cars don't have to carry a child seat. For the full breakdown, see our guide to whether taxis need baby seats in NSW.
Option 1: Hire a car seat for your stay
Sydney has a number of baby equipment hire businesses that rent capsules, convertible car seats and boosters by the day or week. Many will deliver to where you're staying, and some will fit the seat into your car or a hire car for you.
A few things to check when you book:
- The seat suits your child's age and size, and carries the AS/NZS 1754 label.
- Who fits the seat. Car rental companies often add a child seat to your booking, but you may need to install it yourself, and some only offer convertible seats rather than baby capsules.
- How you'll get from the airport to the hire car or the seat in the first place.

Option 2: Bring your own seat from home
If you're travelling within Australia, bringing your own seat is often the simplest choice. Domestic airlines generally let you check in infant items such as a car seat or capsule as extra baggage, but allowances vary by airline and fare, so check yours before you fly.
If you're visiting from overseas, there's an important catch. Child car seats bought overseas generally don't meet AS/NZS 1754 and can't legally be used in Australia, even if they're perfectly safe at home. So for international visitors, bringing your own seat usually isn't an option, and hiring or booking a seat locally is the way to go.
Option 3: Pre-book a taxi with the baby seat already fitted
For airport runs and day trips, many families skip the seat logistics entirely and book a car that arrives with the right seat installed. This is one of the most practical car seat alternatives in Sydney, especially straight after a long flight.
At Baby Taxi Sydney, you tell us your children's ages when you book and we fit the seats before pickup:
- Rear-facing baby capsules for newborns to around 12 months. Our baby capsule taxi page explains how this works.
- Forward-facing toddler seats with a 5-point harness for around 1 to 4 years.
- High-back booster seats for around 4 to 8 years.
Seats are AS/NZS 1754 compliant, anchored with ISOFIX and top tether, and fitted by drivers trained in correct installation. If you have more than one child, see how we handle a taxi with child seats for the whole family. Our quotes are fixed and include baby seats and tolls, and you can read more on our baby seat taxi fares page.

Option 4: Get around by public transport with a pram
For many city days you won't need a car at all. Sydney's trains, metro, buses, ferries and light rail all take prams, and it's free to bring a pram or stroller on board. Children aged 3 and under travel free and don't need a ticket.
- Metro: every station has lifts and there's level boarding, with multi-purpose areas for prams in each carriage.
- Buses: accessible buses have a space for prams near the front, but you may need to fold your pram if the space is taken or the bus isn't accessible.
- Ferries and light rail: follow crew instructions, and on light rail use the double doors in the middle with a pram.
Not every station or wharf has lift access, so use the Transport for NSW Trip Planner to plan an accessible route and check before you go.
Arriving at Sydney Airport without a seat
The airport is where families most often get caught out. A rideshare driver can refuse a family with a child under 7 and no restraint, and a rank taxi can't legally take a baby under 12 months without one. NSW guidance is to book a service that provides a child restraint ahead of time. If you're already at the taxi rank and need a seat, ask the rank marshal for help.
Our Sydney Airport with a baby guide covers the arrival process in more detail. As one parent, Tom S., told us: "Airport pick up and drop off with baby seat was spot on." When you're ready, you can book online or call 0426 779 775.

Can I take my baby in a Sydney taxi without a car seat?
Not if your baby is under 12 months. In NSW, a child under 1 must be secured in a suitable approved child restraint to travel in a taxi, and the driver must not start the trip without one. Children over 1 may legally wear a seatbelt in a taxi, but a suitable child seat is strongly recommended.
Can I use my car seat from overseas in Sydney?
Generally, no. Child car seats bought overseas usually don't comply with the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1754, which makes them illegal to use in Australian vehicles. Australian seats also use a top tether strap that many overseas seats lack. Visitors are advised to hire an Australian Standard seat or book transport that provides one.
Will an Uber in Sydney provide a baby seat?
Standard rideshare cars don't have to carry a child seat, and the same rules as a private car apply, so every child under 7 needs a suitable approved restraint. If neither you nor the driver has one, the driver can legally refuse the trip. Bring your own approved seat or book a service that supplies one.
Do babies need a ticket on Sydney public transport?
No. Children aged 3 and under travel free on Sydney public transport and don't need a ticket, and it's free to bring a pram or stroller on board. Children aged 4 to 15 pay child fares. Use the Transport for NSW Trip Planner to find accessible stations and services before you set out.
Can I hire a car seat in Sydney?
Yes. Several baby equipment hire businesses in Sydney rent capsules, convertible seats and boosters, and many deliver to your accommodation. Some also fit the seat for you. Car rental companies can usually add a child seat to your booking, though you may have to install it yourself, so check before you collect the car.
What's the easiest option for an airport transfer with a baby?
For most families, a pre-booked car with the right seat already fitted is the least stressful choice after a flight. You avoid fitting a seat at the kerb or being refused a ride. Book ahead with your children's ages so the correct capsule, toddler seat or booster is installed before pickup.
