Cruise day with children is exciting, but it also means early starts, big suitcases and strict kerbside rules. Booking a cruise terminal taxi with baby seat already fitted takes one big job off your list, and knowing how each terminal works takes care of most of the rest.

Sydney has two cruise terminals: the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay and the White Bay Cruise Terminal in Rozelle. They're in different parts of the harbour and work quite differently for drop-off and pickup. Here's what families need to know, based on Port Authority of NSW guidance. Arrangements can change, so always check your cruise line's latest information too.

First, check which terminal you're sailing from

It sounds obvious, but heading to the wrong terminal is one of the most common cruise-day mistakes. Your cruise documents will name the terminal, and it's worth checking again close to sailing in case anything changes.

  • Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT): on the corner of Argyle and George streets, Circular Quay West, The Rocks, right beside the Harbour Bridge and across the water from the Opera House.
  • White Bay Cruise Terminal (WBCT): on James Craig Road, Rozelle, in the inner west. Because it sits west of the Harbour Bridge, it's generally used by ships that can pass under the bridge, while the largest ships berth at Circular Quay.

When you book your transfer, give us the terminal name, your ship and your sailing or arrival date so we can plan the right approach.

Circular Quay: Overseas Passenger Terminal drop-off and pickup

The passenger drop-off area is on the lower roadway at Circular Quay West, reached from George Street at the Argyle Street cross street. Port Authority asks vehicles to stop for no more than two minutes, and drivers can't leave the vehicle. There's no parking at the terminal on cruise ship days and no waiting bays.

For families, that two-minute window is the key detail. Having a seat already fitted means nobody is uninstalling a car seat at the kerb. Have bags ready to come out and children ready to hop out on the footpath side.

On disembarkation mornings, the taxi rank for passengers is on Level 3, accessed via Hickson Road, but private pick-ups aren't permitted there. If you've booked a private car, Port Authority says your driver will meet you outside the front of the terminal near the palm trees, and suggests asking the company to call you on arrival.

White Bay Cruise Terminal: access and drop-off

White Bay catches out a lot of drivers. On cruise ship days, road access is only via The Crescent and James Craig Road, not Robert Street in Balmain. GPS apps often suggest Robert Street, but vehicles are turned away at those gates and redirected. Pedestrians and cyclists can still use the Robert Street gate.

The passenger drop-off area is directly outside the terminal. As at Circular Quay, stops should be no more than two minutes and drivers can't leave the vehicle. There's no long-term parking, and the short-stay car park is limited to 15 minutes for pick-ups.

For pickups after your cruise, private cars meet passengers outside the front of the terminal. Have the driver's contact details handy so they can call you once you're out.

Planning a cruise terminal taxi with baby seat

Kids and cruise logistics work best with a bit of buffer. A few things to plan for:

  • Arrival time: Port Authority suggests arriving at least an hour before departure. Bag drop typically opens around 9am, closing about 90 minutes before departure at Circular Quay and about an hour before at White Bay. Check your cruise line's check-in time.
  • Disembarkation: it typically begins around 30 minutes after the ship arrives, but timing varies, so allow flexibility for pickup.
  • Luggage: a family's cruise bags add up fast. Add a pram, and a larger vehicle is often the easier choice.
  • Essentials: keep snacks, water, wipes and a change of clothes in your hand luggage, not your checked bags.

If you're flying in or out the same day, our airport transfers with baby seat can connect Sydney Airport with either terminal.

Choosing the right vehicle for cruise day

Our fleet includes premium sedans, SUVs, 7-seater vans and 11-seater people movers, with large boot space for prams, double prams, travel cots and luggage. A smaller family with light bags may be fine in a sedan or SUV. For two or more children, grandparents coming along, or a week's worth of luggage, a maxi taxi with baby seats keeps everyone together.

Every seat is installed before pickup: rear-facing baby capsules for newborns to around 12 months, forward-facing toddler seats with a 5-point harness for around 1 to 4 years, and high-back boosters for around 4 to 8 years. They're AS/NZS 1754 compliant, anchored with ISOFIX and top tether, and cleaned between trips.

How our cruise transfers work

We run 24/7, 365 days a year, on a pre-booked basis across Sydney, so early ship arrivals and late sail-aways are covered. Pricing is fixed, so the quote is the price, including baby seats and tolls, with no hidden fees.

Patience matters on travel days. As Samantha W. said after an airport pickup: "We had a 40 minute wait on the tarmac and our driver was waiting patiently for us."

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Sydney cruise terminal is my ship using?

Check your cruise documents. Sydney has two terminals: the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay West in The Rocks, and the White Bay Cruise Terminal on James Craig Road, Rozelle. The largest ships generally berth at Circular Quay. Check again close to sailing in case arrangements change, and give us the terminal name when you book.

How do I get to White Bay Cruise Terminal by car?

On cruise ship days, vehicles can only enter via The Crescent and James Craig Road, then follow signs to the terminal. Robert Street in Balmain is not a vehicle entry point on ship days, even though GPS apps often suggest it, and drivers trying it are redirected. Pedestrians can still use the Robert Street gate.

Can a car wait at the cruise terminal while we unload?

Only briefly. At both terminals, Port Authority asks vehicles to stop for no more than two minutes in the drop-off area, and drivers can't leave the vehicle. There's no parking at either terminal for cruise passengers on ship days, so have bags and children ready to get out quickly.

Where does a private car pick us up after the cruise?

At Circular Quay, Port Authority says private cars meet passengers outside the front of the terminal near the palm trees, as the Level 3 taxi rank is not for private pick-ups. At White Bay, private cars meet you outside the front of the terminal. Keep your driver's number handy so they can call on arrival.

Do I need to bring car seats for a cruise transfer?

No. We pre-install the right seats before pickup: rear-facing capsules, forward-facing toddler seats with a 5-point harness and high-back boosters, all AS/NZS 1754 compliant. That means one less bulky item to carry onto the ship, and no seat fitting during the short drop-off window.

How early should we arrive at the cruise terminal with kids?

Port Authority recommends arriving at least an hour before departure, and bag drop typically opens around 9am. Your cruise line will give you a check-in time, so plan your transfer around that and add some buffer for traffic, toilet stops and settling little ones.
