Booking a taxi with 2 car seats sounds simple until you add a pram, a nappy bag and two suitcases. Add a third child and the question changes again: will three seats even fit across one row, or do you need a maxi taxi with baby seats? In Sydney, the right answer depends on your children's ages, the seats they need and how much you're carrying.

This guide explains what changes as you go from one seat to two or three, what the NSW rules mean for seating positions, and how to pick a vehicle that keeps everyone safe and comfortable. It's general information to help you plan, so tell us your details when you book and we'll match the car to your family.

Why two or three car seats changes the vehicle you need

One child seat fits comfortably in almost any car. Two seats take up most of a back seat, especially when one is a rear-facing baby capsule, which needs extra room front to back. Three seats is where many families get caught out.

Child seats aren't all the same width. A capsule, a harnessed toddler seat and a high-back booster each have a different shape, and they need to sit flat and secure without pressing into each other. Whether three seats fit safely across one row depends on the car, the particular seats and the anchorage points available.

There's also the adults to think about. If two parents are travelling with three children, someone has to sit somewhere. In a standard five-seat car, that can leave a parent in the front and no room for the bags.

What the NSW rules mean for seating positions

In NSW, children under 7 must travel in an approved child restraint suited to their age and size. Up to 6 months that's a rear-facing seat; from 6 months to 4 years, a rear-facing or forward-facing seat with an inbuilt harness; and from 4 to 7 years, a forward-facing harnessed seat or an approved booster.

Where children sit matters too:

  • Under 4: must not sit in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows.
  • 4 to 7 years: can only sit in the front if the back seats are taken by other children under 7.
  • Booster seats: must be used with a lap-sash belt, and boosters heavier than 2kg must be anchored.

With three young children, those rules can push a five-seat car to its limit. A vehicle with a second and third row gives every child a proper spot in the back. Taxis have some limited exemptions, which we explain in our guide to whether taxis need baby seats in NSW, but a correctly fitted seat is always the safest choice.

Matching the vehicle to your family

Our fleet includes premium sedans, SUVs, 7-seater vans and 11-seater people movers. As a rough guide:

One or two children, light luggage

A sedan or SUV is often enough for a taxi with 2 car seats, depending on the seat types and how much you're bringing. An SUV gives a little more room around the seats and in the boot.

Two children plus a double pram or lots of bags

Once you add a double pram, travel cot or several suitcases, a 7-seater van usually makes the trip far less of a squeeze.

Three or more children, or a group

For three seats, grandparents coming along or two families sharing, a maxi taxi with baby seats is the comfortable choice. People movers fit several seats side by side, with room left over for adults and luggage.

When you book, we'll confirm the right vehicle based on your children's ages and what you're carrying.

Choosing a maxi taxi with baby seats in Sydney

A maxi taxi with baby seats in Sydney is worth it when you'd otherwise be squeezing, splitting the family across two cars or leaving bags behind. It's especially useful for:

  • Airport runs with long-haul luggage, prams and car seats for everyone. See our airport transfers with baby seat.
  • Cruise days, when a whole family's bags arrive at once.
  • Family days out, birthday parties or events where cousins travel together.
  • Trips with a newborn and older siblings, when a capsule, a toddler seat and a booster all need to fit.

One larger vehicle also keeps the family together, which is easier for everyone than coordinating two cars.

How we set up two or three seats before pickup

At Baby Taxi Sydney, every seat is installed before the car reaches you. You don't need to bring seats or fit them at the kerb. We provide:

  • Rear-facing baby capsules for newborns to around 12 months.
  • Forward-facing toddler seats with a 5-point harness for around 1 to 4 years.
  • High-back booster seats for around 4 to 8 years.

All seats are AS/NZS 1754 compliant and anchored with ISOFIX and top tether, and our drivers are trained in correct installation. Vehicles are cleaned and sanitised, and child seats are cleaned between trips.

What to tell us when you book

A few details help us send the right car with the right seats in the right places:

  • Each child's age, and roughly their height or weight if they're near the next seat stage.
  • How many adults are travelling.
  • Your pram type (single, double, side-by-side or tandem) and any travel cot.
  • How many suitcases and any bulky items like car-seat bags or strollers you're bringing back.
  • Pickup and drop-off points, plus flight or cruise details if relevant.

Our pricing is fixed, so the quote is the price, including baby seats and tolls. You can check how it works on our baby seat taxi fares page. We run 24/7, 365 days a year, on a pre-booked basis. Book online or call 0426 779 775.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a normal taxi fit 2 car seats?

Often, yes. A sedan or SUV can usually take two child seats in the back, though it depends on the seat types and the car. A rear-facing capsule needs more room than a booster. If you're also bringing a pram and luggage, a larger vehicle may be more comfortable. Tell us your children's ages when booking and we'll confirm the right car.

Can three car seats fit across the back seat?

Sometimes, but not always safely. It depends on the car's width, the shape of each seat and the anchorage points available. Many families find a 7-seater van or people mover easier, because the seats can be spread across rows with room for adults and bags. We'll recommend a vehicle based on your children's ages.

When should I book a maxi taxi with baby seats?

Consider a maxi taxi or people mover when you have three or more children in seats, extra adults, a double pram, or lots of luggage such as an airport or cruise trip. It keeps the whole family in one vehicle with every child properly seated, rather than squeezing in or splitting across two cars.

Can my child sit in the front if the back is full?

In NSW, children under 4 cannot sit in the front of a vehicle with two or more rows. Children aged 4 to 7 can only sit in the front if the back seats are taken by other children under 7. Choosing a vehicle with an extra row usually avoids the question altogether.

Do I need to bring my own car seats?

No. We install the right seats before pickup: rear-facing capsules, forward-facing toddler seats with a 5-point harness, and high-back boosters. They're AS/NZS 1754 compliant, anchored with ISOFIX and top tether, and cleaned between trips. Just tell us each child's age when you book.

Do extra baby seats cost more?

Our pricing is fixed, and the quote you receive includes baby seats and tolls, with no hidden fees. The quote reflects your trip and the vehicle you need, so share your children's ages, passengers and luggage when you book to get an accurate price.
